Just thinking about...

The journey to making a difference - making a positive impact - requires strength that seems unimaginable. ...Vision is necessary. Passion is even more necessary. And that "passion" must be matched with lots and lots of "energy" and strength.

Getting in the mix with MIXER

Starting "something new" has not been so easy. Back when I began this blog in January I was filled with inspiration, and ready for dialogue. Needless to say, although still interested in dialogue, it's been a little difficult getting into the swing of blogging. But, I'm working on it!

These days I'm consumed with preparing for EDGEWORKS Dance Theater's Red, Hot & Riot Gala - an exciting spring, and sizzling event, to celebrate 10 strong years. It is also about entering a new phase in our journey. This 10th anniversary season included a dense schedule of activities, the premiere of Trigger, and some special projects such as EDT's upcoming program Mixer.

Mixer is a special showcase performance created specifically for EDT's 10th anniversary season. It will feature the choreography of current and former EDGEWORKS members.  It's been one of my goals for a while now to present such an opportunity for my dancers. More than just another opportunity, it is another unique way of putting EDT's mission into motion. Through this project, audiences will experience the artistic voices of five different men who truly embodies the art of dance as a way of self expression. It's so cool to be a vehicle for creating such opportunities. More details coming soon.

So, as I'm getting in the mix or, at least trying to figure that out, I hope you'll consider mixing and mingling with me at our Red, Hot & Riot Gala. SOMETHING NEW for 2011

What would life be without change? I can't begin to imagine... Perhaps I can't imagine life without change because if there was no change, there would perhaps be no living!?!?!? ... To this day, it still amazes me how the idea of change is often the hot topic around the start of each new year. A seemingly fluid transition and ideal time, creating and committing to change with the start of each new calendar year appears easy to do, and somehow brings about a resurge of hope where perhaps there was none or where hope had faded. It opens up doors and somehow allows us to give ourselves permission to dream again; to have aspirations; to be willing to try something new. To let go of what may have turned into baggage that we've been carrying for far too long. To step outside of our fears - the unknown.

Like many, I too feel something shift within (every time!) that allows me to want to try again, and to become alive and adventurous. This year part of the "something new" for me is starting this blog.  I see the launch of this blog as an extension of my artistic process - one that is rooted in community dialogue, discussion groups, and interviews as  a means to developing creative projects, and to contribute to a greater national conversation about socially inspired and poltically relevant topics.  But, like all great art and good conversations, I'm well aware that something far greater - for lack of a better way to say this- will come about. It will be something that I probably will not have thought about before and/or never anticipated as a result of starting a blog.

I often think about change. I sometimes wonder about what relationships do others have to it. I think about how change has help to shape the person I have become in this moment. I think about my love/hate relationship to it when it comes to my artistic work.

Whatever my relationship is to change, it is definitely not always easy. It is not always the fluid, effortless thing that it appears to be at the start of each new calendar year. The idea of "transformation" is a big part of my work; and I'm looking forward to seeing how it continues to play a role in my work - and my personal journey.

What role does change play in your life? Do you ever wonder about how it has shaped who you are and/or made an impact on your relationships? ... Do you achieve greater success with change when it's done at the start of a new calender year? ... I'm curious...
